Did you ever wake up feeling exhausted? You had only a few hours of sleep and you don't look forward to the day, drained. Today is one of those days for me. I really don't understand where I get the energy from to write this post. Husband is away and both children sleep in my bed. Three is a crowd. Finally, at 5:30 I decided to move to another bed. From 5:30 to 7:00 I was worried: 'how am I going to get through the day feeling exhausted?'. I woke up really really cranky and could not hide it from my children. They tried their best. 8 Year old Lisa said she was going to be my helper the whole day, maybe even for 2 days! She was going to do everything I wanted. Sounds great doesn't it? Very sweet. 11 Year old Nina had a different approach. She mixed her own blend of oils and put it in the diffuser. She said "Mom, come inside, it smells really nice, I created a blend just for you". She continued: "Peppermint to get you more energy, Balance to make you feel, well, balanced, Elevation to improve your mood and I also added Serenity. No idea what it does, but it sounds like you could do with some Serenity". She added: "I take back everything I said yesterday". We had a bit of an argument yesterday.
Indeed, it smelled divine. Despite my tiredness, I went for a run. I know I can't run tomorrow, nor the day after, so today was the day. When I came home, the diffuser was still on. Oooops! Happens when you're tired. It smelled lovely. And this is how I continued my day. Like it or not, I made a small to-do-list yesterday and I just worked through them step by step. Without this is I think I would have been lost, thinking what to do next, brains not working properly. I even filmed a little video for a small group of runners, helping them with tips and tricks for their upcoming run! Weird, getting so much done in this state. My point is actually: children often just seem to know what's best for their parents. Having a little 8 year old helper is wonderful. When I look up the oils they are JUST the right ones! With a big big emphasis on Peppermint, this kicks butt. So I'm sniffing away on the Peppermint, behind my computer, getting more things done than I expected, and it feels great! Tomorrow is another day, let's be grateful for this day, tired or not. x Barbara

You may have heard about self care a lot lately, and how important it is. Have a daily routine, be nice to yourself, treat yourself to celebrate something positive. For me, this is really hard. I have tried meditation, worked really well for a few months, and I know I need to get back into it. And I love dance classes. But after summer holiday, things went back to normal. Rushing to get the kids to school in the morning followed by ALL that needs to be done that day. No meditation, no dance. Relaxation is different for everybody. Some really enjoy going to the hair dresser, or having a massages, or a day out shopping or simply veg out on the couch watching a movie. For me it's different. I loooooove the beach. So today, I AM GOING TO THE BEACH! For me, a day at the beach is the ultimate relaxation. A potential client cancelled our early morning meeting by sms this morning, and the repair guys for my dryer were going to be here between 12:00 and 18:00 (really, serious...). I cancelled the guys and decided to go. Soooo much looking forward. This will give me energy for days, maybe weeks. The more, because this is an Indian Summer Day, so you never know when autumn sets in. Apparently this Thursday already :o(
What gives you energy? And what is your way of relaxation? Do you know that feeling? You just had dinner and not long after you're hungry again! You wonder what you should eat, you open up the fridge and grab something. It might be healthy, it might be junk. It happened to me a few days ago. And I'm usually super aware of what I eat but I ended up with a pack of prawn crackers (kroepoek) and I finished it all by myself. B.t.w. they are not very healthy, just fattening, just like crisps. And while I was eating it I knew exactly why this happened! It could have been avoided too. And once you are aware of it, you too can avoid situations like this. Here's what happened. My husband was in the mood for risotto and decided to prepare it himself. It was a lazy Sunday anyway so I was actually really happy about hubby doing the grocery shopping AND the cooking! The risotto was delicious, with shrimps and garlic, we ate the lot and hubby was happy and proud of his cooking skills. However, some important ingredients were missing: No veg! No salad. Nothing else but the rice really that 'comes out of the ground or grows on trees'. So ofcourse my stomach reacted to it a few hours later: hungry! The prawn crackers looked so tempting so I gave in. I honestly understand how other people feel when they open up a pack of crisps, sweets, chocolate, or whatever they fancy. Once you take one bite you're done! The food industry is really good at understanding our taste buds.
One very easy way to avoid situations like this is just simply: add veg to your meals!!! It will make you feel full for longer and will thank you for giving it what it needs. Bon apetit :o)
